Summer Sessions at Indiana University Bloomington

Precollege

Telluride Association Sophomore Seminar (TASS)

The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs, in conjunction with the Telluride Association, will award scholarships to 16 bright and motivated high school sophomores from all over the country for a challenging six-week, college-level seminar. The program will be held on the Bloomington campus of IU during the summer of 2010. (There is a similar program held at the University of Michigan.) The summer program is free-Telluride pays all housing, dining, and tuition costs. Students who demonstrate financial need can request help with travel costs to and from the program.

TASS students are expected to write several papers over the summer. Two college undergraduates serve as tutors at each program and live with the students. Outside the seminar, there are weekly public speaking programs, writing workshops, guest lecturers, and volunteer projects.

There will not be a grade or college credit for participation. Students will sharpen their reading, writing, speaking, analytic, and computer skills. Students will get a chance to study and learn about college life and enjoy the company and intellectual stimulation of other talented high school students. A typical day is punctuated by lunchtime conversations about the morning`s seminar and spirited late-night discussions about contemporary issues. Enthusiasm for learning and the benefits of friendships developed in the program lasts long after TASS is over.
